Silicone DOT5
DOT 5 brake fluid is silicone based. DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids are glycol based. It can be distinguished from conventional brake fluids by its purple colour. Silicone does not absorb moisture. DOT 5 brake fluid does not become contaminated with moisture over time as conventional DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids do. Silicone is also chemically inert, non-toxic and won't damage paint like conventional brake fluid. It also has a higher boiling point. When changing brake fluids the identical DOT number should be used possibly to avoid all incompatibility. Besides, the manufacturer's information or the information on the expansion tank of the vehicle is important. Care is offered basically also with different basic colours. Thus DOT 5 and DOT 5.1 may be mixed by no means. Please make sure when using DOT 5 that all seals and hoses will accept this silicone based fluid.
